| Oran Es Sénia Airport (Arabic: مطار السانية / وهران) (IATA: ORN, ICAO: DAOO) is an airport located 4.7 nm (8.7 km) south of Oran, near Es Sénia, in Algeria. The training paid off when the 509th spearheaded the Allied invasion of North Africa. The longest Airborne operation occurred 8 November 1942. After a C-47 flight of over 1600 miles from England, the battalion seized Tafarquay Airport in Oran, Algeria by parachute assault.[citation needed] After its capture, the airport was used by the United States Army Air Force Air Transport Command. It functioned as a stopover en-route to Algiers airport or to Port Lyautey Airfield, in French Morocco on the North African Cairo-Dakar transport route for cargo, transiting aircraft and personnel. Project 2007Andrade Gutierrez, a Brazilian company has won a contract to construct a new runway in Oran Airport, located in the second largest city in Algeria. The construction work is estimated to be EUR 20 million. Oran has a population of around 650,000. Being the second largest city of the country, Oran is an important industrial, educational and cultural centre. The construction work at Oran airport is the second contract won by the company in Algeria. |
